After a 10-1 preseason, Missouri tennis came into its SEC opener against Vanderbilt looking to build on that success. The team was hoping to continue the momentum it’s gained while winning seven in a row dating back to late January. In short: it didn’t.

Missouri (10-2, 0-1) was outclassed by the No. 7 Commodores (6-3, 1-0), losing every match and resulting in a decisive 7-0 loss.

The Tigers got off to a bad start in the doubles matches, with Serena Nash and Gabrielle Goldin getting blanked 6-0 by No. 50 Georgia Drummy and Emma Kurtz. Minutes later, the duo of Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Lisa Fukutoku fell 6-2 to Summer Dvorak and No. 37 Amanda Meyer, securing Vanderbilt the coveted doubles point.

Singles didn’t go any better for Mizzou, as freshman Vivien Ábrahám found herself on the other side of a beatdown after a dominating performance last weekend at Missouri State. She lost to Dvorak 6-2, 6-1 in the first finished match of the day.

The next match to end was that of sophomore Ellie Wright, who suffered a similar fate, losing 6-2, 6-3 to freshman Carolyn Campana. Nash soon followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Drummy.

At this point, it was mathematically impossible for Missouri to win the team match, but all the remaining singles matches were played out regardless, the first of those remaining being No. 3 Fernanda Contreras against Middlebrooks. The former beat the latter 6-4, 6-3.

The final two matches of the day were more competitive, with Fukutoku and Taylor Gruber taking their opponents, Meyer and No. 77 Emily Smith, respectively, into third sets before losing.

Mizzou is back in action on Sunday, taking on Kentucky in another SEC matchup.
