Jontay Porter has retorn his right ACL, a representative of the basketball team confirmed to The Maneater on Saturday.
The injury occurred in Denver, where Porter has been rehabbing. Although the team spokesman could not provide details, the Kansas City Star first reported that the injury occurred while Porter was working out on the court.
The sophomore initially tore his right ACL and MCL during a scrimmage against Southern Illinois University on Oct. 21, 2018. The night prior, Porter told media how good he felt about his body after the offseason training.
Porter underwent surgery on Nov. 8, 2018. He was on the Missouri team bench just three times this season.
Coach Cuonzo Martin has had minimum contact with Porter outside of texts.
“I hear from him via text, that sort of thing,” Martin said during a press conference on March 14. “Not necessarily [about his draft plans]. We’ll see when we get to that point. He’ll make the best decision. The most important thing is he makes the decision based on what’s best for him.”
After his initial injury, the question of whether Porter would return to play at Mizzou during the 2019-2020 season or declare for the draft began to circulate. The 19-year-old originally declared for the 2018 NBA Draft, but decided to withdraw and return to school following the combine.
The Porter family has an extensive history with injuries. 2017 McDonald’s All-American Michael Porter Jr. sat out most of the 2017-2018 season with a back injury after being Missouri’s most-discussed recruit. Both Bri Porter and Cierra Porter, the two eldest siblings, have both suffered knee injuries — Bri has torn her left ACL twice and her right three times — that have affected their collegiate careers at MU.
