The Missouri Student Association’s three three auxiliary organizations —STRIPES, Tiger Pantry and Truman’s Closet — will relocate to the Hitt Street Parking Structure.
MSA is taking over an unused storage space inside the parking garage. The entrance to that space faces out towards the Brookside apartments across the street.
MSA presented the announcement during a full senate meeting on Tuesday. The auxiliaries will start operations at their new on-campus location during the first week of April this year.
MSA decided to relocate the auxiliaries because they weren’t accessible for many students. For example, the soon-to-be former locations of Tiger Pantry and Truman’s Closet were off-campus on Rock Quarry Road, which wasn’t readily accessible for students without access to a car.
“We’ve been waiting for this since 2012, so this is huge for us,” MSA Senate Speaker Jacob Addington said. “It’s really going to improve accessibility in these spaces. I can’t think of a better location for it.”
MSA assigned a maximum fund of $150,000 for the relocation, which came from the increase in student enrollment for the current academic year’s freshman class. An exact number for the relocation costs hasn’t yet been determined, but it will stay below that $150,000 maximum, according to Addington.
The new locations will provide many benefits to the auxiliaries. Truman’s Closet will have more storage space and be able to build their current collection of clothes. STRIPES will be able to increase their efficiency because the new location is close to the organization’s downtown pick-up locations.
“It also gives [Tiger Pantry] more space to operate out of,” Matthew Swan, director of Tiger Pantry, said during the meeting’s presentation. “So we will have more space for food storage. We’ll have a few more shelves than we have currently. But it also gives us the opportunity for hosting informational events, talking about how to apply for the SNAP program …”
The auxiliaries will relocate during spring break this semester. There will be a soft opening sometime during the week after spring break. An official opening ceremony will take place on April 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the new location.
