On Feb. 28, Missouri football head coach Eli Drinkwitz and his staff secured another big victory in the recruiting game when 4-star quarterback Sam Horn announced his commitment to Missouri. The 17-year old impressed throughout his high school career, leading Rivals and 247Sports to name him the country’s No. 6-ranked pro-style QB and 82nd-best overall player in the 2022 class.
Horn is an exciting recruit, but it’s important to remember that he faces a quarterback battle as soon as he steps foot in Columbia. Right now, redshirt sophomore Connor Bazelak leads the way on offense. Although only an underclassman, he has emerged as one of the SEC’s most dangerous quarterbacks with a quarterback rating of 73.6. After this season, Bazelak has two remaining years left of eligibility, which might force Horn to wait his turn.
Bazelak isn’t the only competition that Horn faces. The Tiger’s backup quarterback, current freshman Tyler Macon, also holds a place in Drinkwitz’s pecking order. Macon graduated high school as the nation’s No. 13-ranked dual quarterback and No. 5 prospect in the state of Illinois.
Macon landed his first opportunity to play in the Tiger’s 59-28 victory against Southeast Missouri State this past Saturday as he completed 75% of his passes and recorded a touchdown. Just like any Division I program, a starting spot is never guaranteed, but there is also a possibility that Horn will have a lot to prove if he wants to win it sooner rather than later.
Before settling on Missouri, Horn received offers from 19 programs, including Alabama, Clemson and Florida, all programs that would immediately put Horn’s name on the map.
Now with Horn at Missouri, Drinkwitz’s 2022 recruiting class is ranked 17th in the nation. Everything is there for Horn to have a successful career at Mizzou, now fans will have to wait to see how everything pans out in the years to come.
