MU began Homecoming week on Oct. 3 with a free concert from local band Post Sex Nachos. Students gathered in Traditions Plaza as the rock quartet played a variety of original and cover songs with a special appearance from “Hacky Sack Guy”: Derrick Fogle. The Campus Activities Programming Board and Mizzou Alumni Association planned the Sunday night event.
Before the music started, Homecoming Tri-Directors Catherine Corley, Jackson Ptasienski and Jenna Winkler introduced the Homecoming court nominees and counted down to the lighting of the Jesse Hall dome. The dome remained gold for the entire concert.
Sophomore Sara George attended the concert to experience Homecoming on campus for the first time.
“I wanted to come because this is my first year on campus that isn’t super restrictive due to COVID,” George said. “I heard of Post Sex Nachos beforehand, and I wanted to come out and see what everything was all about.”
Post Sex Nachos played a selection of original songs, including the recently released single “Friends.” The band recently wrapped up a summer tour in Columbia on Aug. 20 after they traveled to cities around the country.
The band played “Holdin’ on to You,” a song from their 2021 sophomore album “Grandpa Slinks.” MU graduate Zoë Calsyn directed the “Holdin’ on to You” music video and attended the concert on Sunday.
“[Creating the video] was insane,” Calsyn said. “It was the first music video I ever made. I got to work with some of my closest friends, and it was awesome. It was a really great project for everyone.”
The dome lighting and outdoor concert marks a tradition in the making for Homecoming festivities. Junior Dany Fischer said they were excited to witness Homecoming at MU following COVID-19.
“I am super excited to take part in the first year of the tradition, but also get to witness it,” Fischer said. “I am most excited about the first Homecoming back since COVID and getting to see everyone again.”
Homecoming festivities continued throughout the week, concluding with a football game against North Texas on Saturday. Events include Decorating the District, talent competitions, Almost Midnight Breakfast and a Saturday morning parade.
“I am really excited to see all of the festivities, including the decorations downtown and [to] see the float that the frats and sororities and other student organizations put on,” George said.
