No. 14 Missouri wrestling picked up two more Big 12 victories in Orem, Utah Saturday evening. The Tigers defeated the Wyoming Cowboys before facing off against the hosting Utah Valley Wolverines. In the two schools’ first meet since 2005, Missouri defeated the Wolverines 18-15.
Missouri began the duel at 149 pounds with freshman No. 17 Josh Edmond taking an early 8-1 first-period lead over Utah Valley redshirt freshman Sam Edelblute. Edmond’s explosiveness carried him to a 20-5 victory. Missouri junior Jarrett Jacques followed with a 11-7 victory over Utah Valley freshman Jaxon Garoutte.
Utah Valley finally got on the board with a decision victory. Missouri redshirt freshman Mitchell Bohlken filled in for freshman Keegan O’Toole against Utah Valley freshman Danny Snediker, and the Wolverines capitalized with a 9-3 win.
Redshirt freshman Sean Harman avenged the Tigers’ loss with a 17-4 major decision victory over redshirt freshman No. 32 Kekana Fouret.
The two intriguing matchups of the night came between Missouri’s No. 16 redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent and Utah Valley’s No. 28 redshirt sophomore Jacob Armstrong, and later the Tigers’ No. 12 redshirt freshman Noah Surtin against redshirt junior No. 13 Taylor LaMont.
In the first matchup, Kent and Armstrong battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of the third period. Kent gained an escape point and earned the victory after a potential Armstrong takedown failed to beat the buzzer.
Surtin and LaMont went toe-to-toe, but Lamont came away with a 5-3 victory.
Missouri redshirt sophomore Jack Flynn, freshman Trey Crawford and redshirt junior No. 9 Allan Hart fell in their matchups, while redshirt sophomore No. 15 Zach Elam came away victorious in his.
“We’re going to head home and work this week to get ready for a really tough duel next weekend,” Missouri head coach Brian Smith said.
The Tigers return home on Feb. 6 to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys at the Hearnes Center.
