MU offers a wide variety of courses and majors, but what about students’ passions for pottery? Or dreams of joining an intramural ultimate frisbee team? Luckily, there’s lots of ways to get involved outside of class. Here’s just a few to get you started.
For The Creatives:
Pottery
MUCK(MU Clay Klub) is available for anyone wanting to learn pottery. There is a $20 membership fee for materials each semester.
Choir
The School of Music has several choirs open to all students. Concert Chorale is open to any university student. Auditions for all choirs are Aug. 18-19 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. in Sheryl Crow Hall located in the Sinquefield Music Center. More info can be found on the School of Music website.
Improv
The MU improv team does weekly performances Thursday nights at the Student center in The Shack. Comedy Wars, another MU improv team active on campus, holds free shows every Wednesday at 9:30pm in the Bengal Lair at Memorial union. It’s a great way to relieve stress with some comedy and make friends with people of all different backgrounds. For info on how to apply, email muimprov@gmail.com
For Future Presidents:
MSA
The Missouri Students Association has many opportunities to advocate for student resources and improve the quality of life for students. The MSA First Year council, with applications at msa.missouri.edu, is a year long program specifically designed for first year students.
RHA
The Residence Hall Association is the dorm student government. RHA executive board elections are held once a year in the spring, but greater involvement in the fall will increase chances of securing one of those positions. Reach out to current RA’s for more information.
LBC
The Mizzou Legion of Black Collegians is the only recognized Black student government in the nation. Students can get involved by joining one of their umbrella organizations including the African Students Association, Black Business Students Association, Black Pre-Law Students Association and The IMPACT Movement. The five standing committees, including the Freshman Action Team, also accept new members.
For Finding Your Tribe:
LGBTQ+ Students
The LGBTQ resource center is located in the basement level of the Student center. They hold many events, workshops and trainings to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for queer and questioning students year-round. Students can get involved in these events through their website. The center will be involved in the Department of Social Justice ice cream social during Welcome Week on Aug.18 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Black Culture Center.
Latinx/Latine Students
ALAS (Association of Latin@ American Students) seeks to provide Latine students on campus with their own familia away from home. They meet weekly in the student center and can be joined through MU engage. The yearly “LISTO” meet and greet event provides the opportunity to meet other Latin students on campus.
Black Students
The Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center (GOBCC) is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. They host a myriad of events and house operations for Black students and allies. Some of these events feature organizations like the Freestyle Your Expression Dance team, Mizzou Black Men’s and Women’s initiative and the Diversity in Nursing Association. More information about all of these organizations can be found on the GOBCC website.
Asian American Students:
The Asian American Association (AAA) seeks to spread awareness of Asian Pacific Islander American experiences, cultures and identities through collaboration with other campus organizations. Their meetings are held in the Student Center and occur weekly. Join through MU engage, or go to the Multicultural center (MCC) to inquire about the organization.
Female Students
The Mizzou Women’s Center serves women, men, gender non-conforming and transgender individuals alike. They provide a space for women identifying individuals on campus and advocate for the female student body. Several opportunities to get involved with them and their sister organizations can be found on their website.
For Granola Students:
Hiking, Biking, and Nature-Going
MU Venture Club is a student organization open to all MU students interested in hiking, biking, camping and any other soil-in-your-shoes oriented activity. Their meetings have previously been held in Memorial Union and their Instagram @muventure is chocked full of fireside pictures in the great outdoors.
Sustainability
For a variety of ways to create a greener campus, go to the Sustain Mizzou website for links detailing how students can be a part of initiatives such as Mizzou Eco Racing. This also includes umbrella organizations such as the US Green Building Association, which seeks to educate students on sustainability in built environments in tandem with the college of Architecture.
Peace Nook
Peace Nook, located on 9th and Broadway, is a staple of downtown CoMo. They sell a menagerie of vegan soaps, mesh shopping bags, spiritual books, incense and lots of tye-dye clothing. Volunteer sign up is available through the Mid-Missouri Peaceworks website.
For Jocks:
Intramural sports
According to the MizzouRec website, common intramural sports teams include volleyball, soccer, basketball, and flag football. To sign up, navigate to the MizzouRec website’s FUSION portal, log in with your pawprint, click on the intramural sports link and then the big yellow button that reads “Join a team.”
For Community Service Lovers:
Alternative Breaks
Mizzou alternative breaks are a great way to provide community service while simultaneously traveling and making friends. They offer service excursions over specific weekends and during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Break as well. With service locations in Nicaragua, Portland, OR. and Mexico there is something for everyone.
University Days of Service
For those looking to give back to the community, but seek a more local option, MU offers university-wide days of service throughout the year. Step Forward Day, a day of service in September, is a great way to meet like-minded students, while giving back to the community.
