The race raised over $25,000 for the organization.
MU organization Rockin’ Against Multiple Sclerosis hosted its annual Runnin’ Against MS 5K race on Feb. 11. 1,000 runners crowded the starting line outside of the Student Center Saturday morning to support the cause.
“This is the largest RAMS 5K we’ve ever held,” Cameron Duello, RAMS director of community engagement and the 5K said. “Since we have 1,000 people, we’ve raised over $25,000 for the event.”
RAMS, the largest MU philanthropic organization, raises money for the MS Institute of Mid-Missouri by hosting events like the Runnin’ Against MS 5K. RAMS also offers services — such as helping with housework — to people living with multiple sclerosis while spreading awareness about the illness.
The number of runners increased from last year’s 808, and RAMS commissioned a professional timer to track the participants’ times this year, according to Duello. The route went across campus, taking participants as far as Shakespeare’s before looping back to the starting line.
MU junior Carter Woods finished in first place.
“It feels good to race like that – it’s been a while. For a good cause too,” Woods said.
RAMS has fundraising events scheduled throughout February, such as a cornhole tournament and trivia night. On Feb. 18, the first ever RAMS Gala was held at the Tiger Hotel, featuring a silent auction where the proceeds were donated to the MS Institute of Mid-Missouri. Tickets and more information about the upcoming events can be found on the RAMS website.
