MU’s Horticulture Club held a plant sale at Speaker’s Circle on April 26 to raise funds for the club’s activities.
The club sold basil, aloe, pothos and arrowhead plants. Some of the plants were grown by the club, while others were donated for the sale.
Freshman Kenny Henk is the greenhouse manager of the club, and is a plant science major with an emphasis in horticulture.
“We need funds to pay for keeping our greenhouse, we need funds to pay for soil, the soil is a big expense… so that is our primary cost,” Henk said. “ Also, if we have extra funds, we want to grow our stock of plants.”

While the sale was held primarily to raise funds, the club also seeks to spread information about plants and teach the MU community how to properly care for them.
“You know, a goal of mine is to make [plant] care common knowledge. I want to spread as much information as I can,” Henk said.
The club is seeking to become more active following a brief hiatus as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Henk, the club has three members aside from the executive board.
“We have big things planned for next semester; expect more,” Henk said. “We’re going to be more active in the community. We need to have more sales [and] more events. We want to bring in more club members.”
