Nebraska’s relentless defense overtook a quick offense by the Tigers.
Missouri soccer’s undefeated streak ended at game four after the Tigers were shut out 5-0 by Nebraska on Thursday. The loss drops their record to 2-1-1.
The Tigers came out of the gates quickly, as their first shot on the goal occurred just two minutes into the game. However, Missouri quickly found themselves on their heels for the rest of the half. Nebraska’s Eleanor Dale took advantage of a high bounce and lack of control over the ball just outside of the goal box to curve the shot over Missouri’s Kate Phillips, scoring their first goal of the game in minute 19.
Nebraska’s offense fought even harder in the second half, pummeling the goal with 10 more shots, scoring four and setting the score at 5-0. After a long break down the field and a short pass from Abbey Shwarz to an awaiting Florence Belzile in the middle of the goal box, Nebraska earned their second goal of the game in minute 49. Missouri continued to struggle defensively, leaving the middle of the box open and allowing Dale to score her second goal of the game in minute 53.
Another Nebraska player left unguarded in the Missouri goal box allowed the fourth goal of the game after a high kick to Nicola Hauk resulted in a head ball that went over Phillips and into the back of the net in minute 74.
The final goal of the game came after Nebraska’s Kayma Carpenter took advantage of Missouri playing forward on the field. Carpenter broke past the line of defenders and made a long run for goal. With only one player there to try to stop her, Carpenter was able to sink a shot into the lower right corner after an unsuccessful block attempt by Phillips in minute 81.
Missouri’s usually strong offense struggled, as they registered only one shot on goal and five total for the game. This was in large part due to Nebraska’s tough defense which only allowed four goals in five games so far this season.
The Huskers were set to be a difficult team to beat coming into this game. Nebraska shared Missouri’s undefeated streak coming into the match and had a four-game win streak to their name. The Huskers’ now have a record of 4-0-1 on the season.
Nebraska played hard and aggressive, receiving 17 fouls and one yellow card in the first half alone. However, they were not alone in this fight, Missouri received two yellow cards and 11 fouls in the game.
