Behind stellar outings from Jack Lundin and Alfons Bondesson, Missouri finished 13-under-par in Glen Millican’s coaching debut.
The coach Glen Millican era at Missouri is now officially underway. In his first tournament following 22 years at the helm of New Mexico’s golf program, Millican coached the Tigers to a second place finish early this week in the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff at Dalhousie Country Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Missouri began the tournament strong, finishing Monday in third place before second round play was paused due to inclement weather. After concluding their second round early Tuesday morning, the Tigers found themselves sitting in fourth behind Ball State University, Stetson University and SEC rival Louisiana State University. Missouri proceeded to dominate the final round, as they were the only team to shoot below par, finishing the round 8-under and 13-under overall. The performance was enough to pass Ball State and Stetson on the leaderboard, but the Tigers were still seven strokes shy of LSU, who ended the tournament in first with 844 strokes.
The best performance of the week came from senior Jack Lundin. Lundin was the only Tiger to stay under par through the first two rounds, shooting 67 and 68 his first two times through the par 72 course. While he was unable to replicate that success on Tuesday, Lundin was able to ride Monday’s performance to a second place finish. The South Dakota native ended his tournament 10-under par with 206 strokes, just one stroke behind LSU’s Alex Price.
Sophomore Alfons Bondesson was the catalyst for Missouri’s dominance on Tuesday. After finishing his second round with an eagle on the 18th hole, the sophomore had the best third round performance out of the entire field of 72. He shot 7-under-par, besting the next-best third round showing by four strokes. After beginning Tuesday in 37th place, he would end the tournament with a score of 213, good enough for eighth place at 10-under-par.
Junior Dagbjartur Sigurbrandsson joined Lundin and Bondesson in the top 20, shooting a 218, placing him in a 3-way tie for 19th place.
Senior Charlie Crockett and Sophomore Virgilio Paz rounded out the team representatives for Missouri, finishing 26th and 34th, respectively. Crockett was 4-over-par, and Paz was two strokes behind at 6-over.
Participating in the tournament individually were junior Trevor Mierl, along with a trio of freshmen in Adam Miller, Peyton Pervis and Brock Snyder. Mierl ended in a tie for 44th place, though he was able to get his first eagle of his season on the 18th hole in his second round. Miller and Pervis ended tied for 53rd place, both shooting 227 in their collegiate debuts. Snyder had the highest score of all Tigers, shooting a 232, finding himself tied for 61st place.
Missouri will look to build off of its strong start this weekend when they travel to Scottsdale, Arizona, to participate in the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate tournament.
