The Tigers failed to build on their strong start to the season, finishing 10th in their second tournament of the new campaign.
Missouri men’s golf could not continue on their success from their first tournament of the year, finishing in 10th place with a 13-under-par performance this weekend in the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate tournament at the Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ.
Missouri fell behind the field quickly on the first day of the tournament. Even though the Tigers stayed at par, shooting a 284 as a team, they found themselves sitting in 13th place out of the 15 teams competing.
Saturday was the best day of the weekend for the Tigers. As a team, they shot 273, an 11-stroke improvement from the previous day, putting them 11-under-par overall. The major boost on the scoresheet did not correlate with the standings for Missouri, only improving their place by one spot, therefore ending the day in 12th place.
Sunday played out similar to Friday for Missouri. The Tigers shot 282 in the third round to finish the tournament 13-under-par. Fortunately for Missouri, Colorado and Georgia State both shot over-par on the day, allowing the Tigers to jump to 10th by weekend’s end.
The best individual performance for Missouri came from sophomore Virgilio Paz. Paz shot 5-under-par (69-66-73), finishing tied for 25th in the individual standings. His 208 strokes set a new career-best in a 54-hole tournament. This surpassed his previous best of 214, set last season when he was playing for New Mexico.
Finishing second for Missouri was senior Jack Lundin. Lundin finished one stroke behind Paz, finishing 4-under-par with 209 strokes (70-68-71). The senior ended the day tied for 29th place.
Freshman Adam Miller made a remarkable improvement in his second career tournament. Following an 11-over-par finish last week in Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff, Miller finished 1-under par (72-70-70). This was his first tournament finish under par in his college career, and placed him in a tie for 46th place individually.
Rounding out the participants for Missouri were senior Charlie Crockett and junior Dagbjartur Sigurbrandsson. Crockett improved by three strokes each round and finished in a tie for 55th with a 213, which was par for the course (74-71-68). Sigurbrandsson shot 5-over-par (73-69-76), putting him in a tie for 65th place.
The Tigers will look to rebound on September 18th and 19th, when they head to Westchester, IL to participate in the first edition of the Chicago Highlands Invitational.
