Senior Mae Canete shined in the tournament, racking up three wins herself
This weekend, The Tigers opened up their fall tournament schedule by competing at the H-E-B Invitational hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas. They played against teams such as Illinois, Nebraska, Baylor, Tennessee, Denver and Southern Methodist. This is the first look at the veteraned tennis squad which has eight players returning from last year’s team.
Missouri picked up two wins on day one, with a singles win by senior Mae Canete against Denver (6-2, 7-6), and a doubles win against Baylor, 6-2.
Day two saw three wins for the Tigers. With the singles win coming from Mae once again, defeating Illinois 6-3 and 6-1. The duo of Mae and junior Inah Canete won two doubles matches against Denver (6-2) and Illinois. (6-4).
The Tigers wrapped up day three with a lone singles win by Mae, defeating Nebraska, (6-2, 5-7, 10-4). Missouri finished the tournament with six wins, and Mae led the team with three singles wins. Mae currently leads the team with six wins on the season and is looking to take this level of play into the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, where she’ll be competing this week.
This is Coach Turati’s first tournament as the official head coach, as she was the interim head coach the prior year. Turati talked to Mizzou Athletics about the team’s improvement and performance throughout the tournament.
“It was a very positive weekend for us overall,” Turati said. “The goal of this first tournament was to test our level and play as many doubles and singles matches as possible. I am happy about how the girls played and competed. Now we need to get back to work and get ready for Regionals.”
The team continues its fall season at the ITA Regionals on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Lawrence, Kansas. Mae will be participating in the ITA All-American Championship on Oct. 2 in Cary, North Carolina.
