Missouri track and field caps off their nice indoor season with a solid outing at the NCAA indoor championships
Missouri track and field finished their overall successful indoor season at the NCAA indoor championships in Boston on March 8-9. Missouri had senior Alicia Burnett go for the women and freshman Sterling Scott go for the men.
On day one of the championships, Burnett was the first to represent the Tigers on the national stage. Burnett competed in the women’s 60-meter in part because of her huge efforts throughout the previous competitions.
Burnett had an incredible final season for the Tigers, starting out the season strong with a 24.39 personal best time in the 200-meter at the Vanderbilt Invitational. She placed fourth in the event and the time placed fifth on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list. She didn’t stop there however, as on the second day at Vanderbilt, she ran another personal best time of 7.40 in the 60-meter final and finished third in the event. That time found a No. 3 spot on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list.
At the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, Burnett would place first on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list twice in just one day. For the 60-meter, Burnett first set the record with a time of 7.28 in the qualifying round. In the final, she broke the record again with a time of 7.21 to place second in the event. She again wouldn’t stop there, as on day two of the invitational, Burnett finished with a personal best time of 24.06 in the 200-meter for a fourth-place finish in the event. This time Burnett placed No. 4 on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list for the event.
At the Music City Challenge, Burnett proved she was a strong contender at nationals. She finished with a personal best time of 55 seconds in the 400-meter event, earned a fourth-place finish and placed No. 6 on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list. Finally, at the SEC Championships, Burnett placed No. 7 in the 60-meter final with a time of 7.28.
This all led up to the NCAA indoor championships in Boston. Burnett had a performance on par with her previous showings this season, earning a No.12 finish in the qualifying round of the 60-meter with a time of 7.29. This was not enough to qualify for the finals so her season ended there. Burnett’s season was still filled with records that are stamped in Missouri track history.
The other representative of the Tigers on the national stage was Scott. Scott burst onto the scene this season at the Vanderbilt Invitational with a 7.24-meter distance in the men’s triple jump (23-9), earning himself a No. 6 finish. Scott followed that up on the second day of the invitational with a 15.17m distance in the triple jump (49-9 1/4). This earned him a No. 4 finish and a No. 10 spot on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list for the event.
At the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, Scott kept it rolling with a 6.99-meter long jump (22-11), earning himself a No. 7 finish in the event. On day two of the invitational, Scott had the highlight of his season, finishing with a 15.72-meter personal best distance in the triple jump (51-7) and won the event. That 15.72-meter jump placed him No. 6 on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list for the event.
Scott would then go on to be just 1 of 2 Tigers to go to the Tyson Invitational, earning a No. 10 finish with a 15.01-meter triple jump (49-3). At the SEC Championships, Scott was the biggest standout for the Tigers, placing third with a 16.14-meter personal best triple jump (52-11 1/2) and placing No. 3 on Missouri’s indoor all-time top 10 list in the event as a result.
Finally, at the NCAA indoor championships, Scott had a 15.50m triple jump (50-10.25) to finish No. 11 in the event. Scott still had an incredible season and looks to continue developing his career with the Tigers in his three years to come.
After capping off their excellent indoor season, Missouri track and field will now begin their outdoor season on Friday, March 15 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta.
