The Tigers were unable to defeat Vermont on the road
Missouri women’s basketball fell to Vermont on Monday with a final score of 46-62.
The Tigers secured the tip off and started its game off strong. Laniah Randle made the first two baskets of the game, taking an early 4-0 lead. Vermont quickly adapted to Missouri’s defense, tying the score at 8-8.
Nyah Wilson and Gracie Slaughter scored in response, taking back the lead 12-10. Hannah Linthacum contributed with a layup after a Vermont bucket, as Missouri retook the lead 14-12.
Vermont finished the quarter on a big run, and MU wasn’t able to catch up. They finished the first quarter 20-23 with a 3-pointer from Ashton Judd.
Vermont kept its strong defense in the second quarter, and the Tigers couldn’t get an open shot. With a mix of bad passes and technical errors, MU continued to fall behind.
Angelique Ngalakulondi made a bucket for the Tigers, as they trailed heading into the half 25-30.
The Tigers failed to maneuver around Vermont’s defense in the third quarter. Missouri scored the majority of its points off free throws and turnovers from Vermont.
Judd made a basket from the corner, cutting the deficit to 10 late in the third. Vermont’s 3-pointers only seemed to increase and the Tiger’s defense began to fall apart as the Catamounts wrapped up the third quarter ahead 32-44.
The Catamounts continued to build its lead in the fourth quarter, extending it to 20-plus at times. De’Myla Brown made a pair of late free throws, but Vermont secured the 46-62 victory.
“Defensively we were stuck slow on everything we did,” said head coach Robin Pingeton. “We didn’t have the grittiness that we’ve been practicing with … to have this be our first showing is definitely disappointing.”
The Tigers faced Southern University on Thursday, Nov. 7 at Mizzou Arena.
