Slaughter finished the night with a career-high 22 points
Missouri women’s basketball picked up a win over Tulane on Tuesday Nov. 12, moving to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore guard Grace Slaughter led the way with her late-game heroics, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter alone. Slaughter also had a career-high of 22 points, on a very efficient 8-for-12 shooting.
“I think you put in that work to go into the game and feel confident just in your shot, and all the work you put in off the court,” Slaughter said.
Missouri head coach Robin Pingeton testified to Slaughter’s off-court work as well.
“I can see her every day, and her work ethic is second to none,” Pingeton said. She is just so disciplined with her daily schedule, you never see Grace, high, low.”
Senior transfer Laniah Randle was second in scoring, finishing with 12 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Randle had multiple baskets at timely moments during Missouri runs, leading to her unleashed fiery nature. Two of the loudest moments of the night came when Randle finished through contact and immediately went to hype up her team and the crowd with screams.
“I feel like I just get myself hyped up, and I feel like I can get the team hyped up if I do so,” Randle said.
Randle also played a big part in the team’s stellar second-half defensive performance, holding Tulane to just 15 points on 4-for-20 shooting splits. Missouri came out in the second half running a press and trapped Tulane around mid-court multiple times, resulting in turnovers.
Tulane wasn’t the only team to struggle with turnovers, as Missouri had 18 of their own. Those 18 combined with Tulane’s 26 resulted in a total of 44 turnovers in the game. This averages out to more than one turnover per minute – an abysmal stat for both sides.
One Tiger who didn’t struggle with turnovers was sophomore Averi Kroenke. Kroenke notched six assists to just one turnover, leading the Tigers in assists on the night. This was Kroenke’s career high by more than double her previous total. Kroenke’s impact on the night was strongly felt through her playmaking.
The Tigers travel to Western Illinois to take on the Leathernecks at 7:00 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 15, with a chance to improve to 3-2.
