With the temperature dropping and the snow hitting the ground, it’s time for you to update your playlist
As the temperature drops and snow continues to fall, it’s time to grab your scarf, gloves and headphones as you walk through campus. At times, it’s difficult to find songs that match the changing weather. Lucky for you, I’ve collected some of the best songs to help you on your winter wonderland walks.
Many University of Missouri students wish the cold weather would disappear and the snow would stop soaking their socks. However, lead singer Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam has a different wishlist. Vedder lists all of his wishes on the track “Wishlist” off Pearl Jam’s 1998 album “Yield.”
This line beautifully captures the essence of why the song resonates so deeply. The mention of an ornament and Christmas tree evokes powerful imagery that instantly transports the listener to a familiar, cozy holiday scene. These small yet meaningful details evoke warmth and nostalgia — elements that are especially potent during the winter season. This makes “Wishlist” feel intimate and relatable as if Pearl Jam invites the listener to share a quiet, reflective moment.
During the colder seasons, I prefer listening to softer music. Since its release in May, “Wildflower” by Billie Eilish has been on repeat for me. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of her music, but this song is so emotionally raw that it made me pause and reflect on my life choices – a perfect song for a walk.
With its beautiful lyrics and Eilish’s haunting vocals, it’s safe to say this is a song everyone should hear especially during the winter season. The sound that “Wildflower” has makes me feel like I’ve just been hit in the heart with ice and it’s slowly becoming frozen solid.
Another band with a quieter presence than Eilish is NewDad. Lead singer Julie Dawson effortlessly captures a dreamy, chilled sound with an enchanting, icy quality. Dawson’s ethereal vocals make it perfect for moments when you’re curled up inside, away from the chill or even while walking through the wintry landscape. Similar to “Wildflower,” the song, “Under My Skin” explores guilt, Dawson’s writing is nothing short of beautiful.
For years, Radiohead has been one of my favorite bands due to their musicality. “All I Need” is one of my all-time favorite songs. Not only are the lyrics stunning but the ending which entails a grandiose piano solo, hits you like an unexpected snowfall.
Shifting away from melancholic tunes, I finally have a heartwarming song to share. The 1975’s 2022 album “Being Funny In A Foreign Language” is filled with winter vibes, especially with its snow-covered album cover. However, the 11th track, “When We Are Together,” stands out the most. The song begins with a gentle acoustic guitar, gradually building into a rich orchestral arrangement; eventually Healy’s sincere lyrics transform the track into a stunning love song.
As you get ready to bundle up for the chilling temperatures, be sure to queue these songs for your walk to class. Take a moment to enjoy the winter scenery while immersing yourself in everything from grunge to pop. Who knows, these tunes might even help you embrace the snow.
