Missouri track and field had a record-breaking weekend at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kansas, fueling a high-intensity rivalry matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks. The Tigers combined historic individual performances on the track with a dominant showing in the throwing rings to solidify their standing ahead of the postseason.
The weekend was headlined by senior Lasse Funck, who continued his exceptional outdoor campaign by clinching his second consecutive 1,500-meter title. Funck dominated the field with a personal-best time of 3:41.25, a mark that ranks No. 2 all-time in program history. His victory followed a deep effort from the Tigers in the event, as sophomores Finn Russell and Carter Spradling secured seventh and 11th-place finishes, respectively.
Missouri’s distance group also took home hardware in the 5,000-meter race. Junior Tyler Freiner secured a runner-up finish on the men’s side, clocking a personal record of 14:06.70 to move into No. 10 all-time in school history.
For the women, freshman Natalie Barnard established her own personal best, crossing the line in 17:15.57 to finish fourth overall. Freshman Elissa Barnard added to the personal-record tally in the 1,500 meters, placing 12th with a time of 4:39.68.
The Tigers’ field athletes matched the track’s intensity, particularly in the hammer and javelin throws. Senior Sam Innes spearheaded the men’s hammer squad with a silver-medal toss of 67.84 meters. He was supported by senior Garik Pozecki, whose personal-best throw of 63.61 meters earned him fourth place and moved him to No. 9 all-time at Missouri. On the women’s side, junior Kaitlyn Morningstar claimed silver in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.48 meters.
Missouri’s javelin crew demonstrated impressive depth, sweeping second through fifth. Junior Morgan Cannon led the charge with a runner-up mark of 47.12 meters, followed closely by sophomore Val Galligan, graduate Marysa Flieg and sophomore Adrienne Russell.
In the vertical and horizontal jumps, graduate Euphenie Andre notched a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.65 meters, and both sophomore Allison Geen and senior Anna Vedral both cleared 3.57 meters in the pole vault.
On the final day of competition, graduate Dillon Leacock added a strong performance in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in 14.28. Senior Clayton Kamp rounded out the weekend’s scoring in the discus throw, earning third place with a toss of 48.80 meters.
With the regular season now concluded, the Tigers shift their focus to the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in Gainesville, Florida. Missouri will look to carry this momentum and its new entries in the record books into the conference stage starting May 14.
