Despite finishing 14-1 in non-conference play, the Missouri Tigers knew challenges lurked ahead against the talented Big 12 teams. Sophomore guard Alec Burks and the Buffaloes showed the Tigers just how competitive the conference would be Saturday afternoon.
Burks scored 36 points to lead Colorado to an 89-76 upset of Missouri (14-2) in the conference opener. The loss snaps a streak of nine consecutive wins by the Tigers.
Sophomore guard Michael Dixon led the Tigers with 17 points in the loss. Freshman guard Phil Pressey came back from injury, going 0-2 from the field in nine minutes of action.
The Tigers trailed for most of the game, and went into halftime down 12 points. Missouri made a late surge in the second half, cutting the deficit to eight points with less than five minutes left in the game. However, Burks pushed the lead back to double digits on a turnaround-jumper with one second left on the shot clock to seal the victory for the Buffaloes.
Junior forward Lawrence Bowers was a force on the defensive end in the loss, finishing with a career-high eight blocks to go along with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Kim English struggled from the field, finishing 2 of 10 for seven points.
Missouri fell to 2-3 in season openers under coach Mike Anderson. The No. 8 Tigers now head home to square off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers Wednesday at Mizzou Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central Time.
