Two Columbia residents in the same vehicle were arrested Wednesday evening after police pulled them over for speeding.

The men were arrested on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a felony amount of marijuana.

A Boone County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit stopped a speeding car at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of N. Oakland Gravel Road and E. Starke Lane, a sheriff’s department news release stated.

During the traffic stop, officers discovered the driver, 37-year-old Johnny V. Ellis, was intoxicated. He was arrested on suspicion of one count of driving while intoxicated and one count of driving with a revoked license, the news release stated.

Investigators also discovered the passenger, 30-year-old Joshua P. Cowans of Columbia, had an outstanding warrant from June 2010 with the Columbia Police Department. He was arrested on charges of property damage and second-degree for child endangerment, a misdemeanor, Boone County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Mike Krohn said.

According to the release, suspects also gave the officers permission to search the vehicle, which led officers to find a felony amount of marijuana in the vehicle.

“It was a consent search, so it’s just one of the tactics that law enforcement officers employ, if they have reason to believe that another crime is occurring,” Krohn said.

When you have the opportunity to ask someone for a consent search of the vehicle and they agree, you do it.”

Boone County Sheriff’s Department could not release how much marijuana was discovered, because the case is pending and tests still need to be made in the lab, Krohn said.

Krohn said traffic stops frequently lead to other arrests.

“They are very common daily,” he said. “They happen all day, every day, in every law enforcement agency.”

Both men were arrested that evening and have been released from the Boone County Jail on bond.
