The suspect identified on a surveillance camera in connection with Saturday morning’s Ellis Library fire turned himself in.
Christopher C. Kelley, an MU graduate and events assistant with the MU Police Department, turned himself in to MUPD at 11:58 a.m. following the release of his image to the community and MU campus.
“He was an events staff person with us,” MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said. “He worked move-in and a football game. He has worked at the job about a month. We had calls from the community identifying him to turn himself in.”
Kelley is suspected to have started the fire on the second floor of Ellis Library, which broke out around 3:30 a.m., leaving moderate smoke and water damage.
The Columbia Fire Department responded to the fire through notification from one of the library’s automatic fire alarms. The fire occurred on the second floor of the library and was being controlled by automatic fire sprinklers upon their arrival. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
There is moderate smoke and water damage to Ellis and the State Historical Society, according to an MU news release. The library will remain closed Saturday and Sunday.
Kelley was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, second-degree arson, two counts of second degree tampering and seven counts of second-degree property damage, according to a news release.
The investigation is still underway.
