Fake Brian Brooks, Fake Brother Jed and now Fake Missouri Students Association Presidential Slate? Well, it’s all in good fun we suppose, and the MSA slate will be more than a Twitter account.
The new, fake MSA slate is the product of MSA Student Affairs chairman Tyler Ricketts and Residence Hall Association speaker of Congress Kathy Rudd. The two created the campaign in an attempt to draw more attention to MSA presidential elections.
Turnout in these elections is historically low, a sad fact considering this organization controls millions of dollars and directly affects life on campus. Not only do they fund many auxiliaries, they’re whom administrators often turn to for the student body opinion and they control or contribute to most events taking place at MU.
It’s important for students to be less apathetic and take notice when their future student leaders try speaking with them.
And it’s an unfortunate fact that after last year’s shit-show debacle, campaign rules were tightened, making it more difficult for slates to reach students with their campaigns. This means students may have to actively seek out information or attend some of the scheduled events in order to meet their potential student government leaders.
You may think these are simple figureheads playing government, but few, if any students can claim a larger role in campaigning for a student tailgating space when Reactor Field was taken away than former MSA presidents Jordan Paul and Tim Noce.
MSA is making attempts to reach students, and we encourage students to take note and interact.
