1. Walmart thief punches officer in rib cage
Dustin Odale Deacon, 19, turned himself in Thursday evening after stealing window tinting materials from the Walmart Supercenter at 1201 Grindstone Parkway. Deacon had been given a trespassing warning before after stealing from the store Oct. 12. Deacon returned to the store Wednesday when he stole the window materials. When a loss prevention officer approached Deacon, he punched the officer in the rib cage. He was arrested and charged for two counts of stealing and third degree assault.
2. Fire alarm alerts officers to underage drinker
MU police were on patrol at 1:26 a.m. Saturday near the Turner Avenue Parking Garage when someone pulled the garage’s fire alarm.
Officers investigated and came upon Alexander Sminchak, 20, according to an MUPD police report.
“Officers detected a strong odor of intoxicants” coming from Sminchak, Capt. Brian Weimer said. “It was unknown whether he was involved in the alarm activation.”
Sminchak pulled away from the officers when they attempted to arrest him on charges of minor in possession of alcohol. He was also charged with resisting arrest.
3. Man passes out on vent with pills in pocket
MU police were dispatched at 5:11 a.m. Saturday to Laws Residence Hall at 1005 Maryland Ave. to investigate a man passed out on a vent. Officers found Troy Kirouac, 18, unconscious but breathing, according to an MUPD police report.
“Emergency personnel arrived on the scene but they determined Kirouac did not need emergency medical assistance,” Weimer said.
Upon investigation, officers found Vyvanse in Kirouac’s pocket. Kirouac was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance. Additionally, there was already an outstanding warrant for Kirouac’s arrest on charges of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.
4. Student runs from cops, arrested later
MU police officers on patrol at 12:13 a.m. Monday near Clyde Wilson Memorial Park smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the area.
Officers saw a male subject they later identified as Alan Brant, 18, start running as soon as he saw the officers and temporarily managed to evade arrest.
“Officers were able to identify him by other means and make contact at a later time,” Weimer said.
Brant was arrested on charges of resisting arrest.
