The closing of the fall semester brings the beginning of new Greek Life leadership.
MU’s Panhellenic Association held elections for its executive board 11 a.m. Sunday in Jesse Wrench Auditorium. The presidents and one PHA delegate from each chapter attended the elections and cast their votes.
Comprised of seven members of PHA organizations, the executive board oversees all PHA organizations in MU’s Greek Life community. Officers organize each year’s formal recruitment as well as events for all chapters to attend.
To run for an executive board position, one must have been initiated for at least one calendar year, have a minimum 2.75 GPA and be in good standing with one’s chapter. Previous leadership experience is not required but is advantageous, PHA spokeswoman Crystal Richardson said.
“It does not say in our constitution that they have to have leadership, but it is an advantage when going through applications,” Richardson said. “Usually, applicants are very well-qualified.”
Candidates must submit an application created by the current executive board members and speak for three to four minutes. After each candidate speaks, the executive board asks her questions pertaining to the position for which she is running.
The presidents and delegates finished casting their votes around 3 p.m. Executive board members tallied votes and, upon determining the winners, called the new board members so they could officially accept their positions. The new members were allowed to tell their chapters after 5 p.m.
Seven of eight board positions have been filled. New board members will be installed in November and will take office next semester.
Gamma Phi Beta’s Julie Dingledine will serve as PHA President. Dingledine is currently her chapter’s president as well.
Whitney Lange from Kappa Delta will be the Vice President of Programming.
Zeta Tau Alpha’s Maddie Metcalf will be the Vice President of Risk Management. Metcalf is currently the president of Zeta Tau Alpha.
Teagan Russell of Sigma Sigma Sigma will serve as the Vice President of External Recruitment. Russell was one of the Pi Chis for Fall 2011 PHA Formal Recruitment.
Phi Mu’s Alex Pisauro will be the Vice President of Member Education. Pisauro serves as her chapter’s Panhellenic Delegate. She was also a Pi Chi for the Fall 2011 PHA Formal Recruitment.
Alyssa Goodman of Alpha Chi Omega will serve as the Vice President of Public Relations.
Alpha Delta Pi’s Sam Schumacher will be the Vice President of Finance and Records.
The Vice President of Internal Recruitment has not been chosen yet. A second round of elections will be held in the near future to fill the position, Coordinator of Greek Life Dustin Page said.
Richardson said she advises the new executive board to have an open mind and be role models to the Greek Life community.
“They should stand up for what they believe in, try to further advance the progress they’ve already made and do their best to make changes necessary for the community to succeed in the future,” she said.
