To whom it may concern:
Having an MU Homecoming and a separate Black Homecoming is sending the wrong message to students, faculty, alumni, and anyone else who realizes that one school celebrating Homecoming in two different ways is not the right thing to do. It is a shame that MU, who many have thought invented Homecoming, can’t seem to reconcile racial differences during what is supposed to be a time where MU alumni and students come together to celebrate all things Mizzou.
Instead, MU insists on having a Black Homecoming and a Homecoming for everyone else.
“Black Homecoming has been an annual event since 1988, though it took a break from 1995 to 2008.” This statement is meant to show how rich and important the traditions of starting the Black Homecoming are. Eleven Black Homecomings in 23 years does not a tradition make.
Let’s put an end to this “tradition” and come together as a truly diverse, integrated university. Let the LBC know that you think having 2 separate Homecomings sends the wrong message. Tell them that you believe it is best to combine the two.
