Judging by his tour name and increasing prominence on the rap scene, Big Sean seems to be on the rise. The Detroit rapper and his “I Am Finally Famous” tour took a short break from its rapid ascent to head south to Columbia, performing for a sold-out MU crowd Thursday in Jesse Hall.

CyHi the Prynce and Shawn Christopher led the concert. CyHi, Big Sean’s labelmate from Kanye West’s GOOD Music, performed his verse from West’s “So Appalled,” and Christopher tried to get the crowd off their feet with a cover of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems.” Despite the two rappers’ impressive chops — their flows were put on display during their respective a cappella freestyles — it was obvious the crowd was there for Big Sean.

When Sean came on stage in his camouflage vest, chain and snapback, the crowd went into a frenzy that exploded each time the 23-year-old rapper removed an article of clothing and didn’t seem to stop until the final strains of closer “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay.”

Big Sean performed songs from his new album, _Finally Famous_, as well as his three mix tapes, leaving little to the imagination as to the origin of the tour’s title.

MU senior Marcus Denmon and junior Michael Dixon attended the show Thursday. Dixon said he was impressed.

“It was pretty good,” Dixon said. “He was better than I thought he was gonna be. He’s an up-and-coming rapper, so it was a good experience.”

Denmon said he wasn’t completely sold.

“It was all right,” he said. “I like Big Sean. I’m a fan of him.”

Denmon’s favorite Big Sean song was “Dance (A$$),” and he seemed to be in the majority. The crowd — most notably the female fans — lost it when the booty-based track began.

Big Sean seemed as impressed by the Tiger ladies as they were with him. He commented on how good they looked after dropping in the front row to snap a few shots with the crowd.

Sean appeared very grateful for his seemingly long-awaited fame, thanking his mother for giving her support, the fans for giving him fame and God for apparently giving him a free Egg McMuffin.

Big Sean, who said he continued to pursue music despite a teacher’s disapproval, offered a few words of wisdom to the crowd.

“Do what you love for a living,” he said. “That’s the most important thing.”
