Last week the big news that we had all been waiting for — whether in a positive or negative way — finally came. MU is officially moving to the Southeastern Conference. With the move to the SEC comes many pros and a few cons, but no doubt, from either viewpoint, many instances of change. Change is anything from trivial things like a new outfit, light-hearted major things like a conference change, or the end of a relationship. The following are songs that cover a wide range of change.
**1. “Better Things”—The Kinks**
This song is fairly straight to the point, expressing the notion of learning from the past and looking forward to the future and all of the positive things that it can and will bring. Despite one’s stance on the move before it happened, the fact of the matter is it’s for sure now, and in the long run MU will grow and develop into an even stronger version of what we are today. “The past is gone, it’s all been said/So here’s to what the future brings.” There’s no point in focusing on the past when there’s a whole future ahead of you, and The Kinks capture this fact of life in their song “Better Things.”
**2. “Bowl of Oranges”—Bright Eyes**
Not so literal this time. Bright Eyes’ “Bowl of Oranges” is a song about a different type of change, but change nonetheless. As with many Bright Eyes songs, the lyrics pertain more to love and life, which is quite different from a change in conferences. Regardless, “Bowl of Oranges” brings a lighthearted and upbeat tune to a theme of change in one’s life.
**3. “After The Storm”—Mumford & Sons**
“After the Storm” focuses more on the changes after a tragedy, through the metaphor of a literal storm. The comforting tone of the lead vocalist mixed with simple background noises and meaningful lyrics brings emotion to the forefront of the song. Change on a larger scale is addressed in this calming song.
**4. “Always Where I Need to Be”—The Kooks**
The Kooks approach change in a different way with this song. Rather than thinking about what could happen and how it would be great, they acknowledge how wherever they are is exactly where they are supposed to be. Rather than be discontent with the present and wary of the future, they lyrics encourage people to look at where they are and appreciate everything that led up to that point. We’re where we are for a reason, and this song spins a positive light on what we have, whether that be a new relationship, a new school or a new conference.
