A Columbia man was arrested Wednesday during a routine address check of sex offenders conducted by Boone County sheriff’s deputies.
Warren D. Spain, 38, of 3407 Westwinds Drive, Apt. B, was convicted of sexual assault. He had been arrested twice before for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, according to a news release.
“We keep track of who registers and who does not register,” Detective Tom O’Sullivan said. “We checked on our list and could see that he had not registered. If you do it more than once, it is a felony.”
Spain was released from the Boone County Jail after posting a $4,500 bond.
Convicted sex offenders are required to register at the sheriff’s department. They must provide a place of employment, current and valid address and other information.
Individuals convicted of sex crimes against children must report to the sheriff’s department every 90 days. Individuals convicted of sex crimes against adults must report every six months, according to a news release.
Approximately 70 additional residences were checked. Most were following terms of their registration.
Several offenders appear to be in violation of their registration. The investigation is ongoing and could lead to arrests, according to a news release.
“We do these checks about every three months,” O’Sullivan said. “We send a bunch of deputies and detectives out with names and addresses of these sex offenders. We make sure they are living where they are supposed to be living.”
