I don’t sleep anymore. I barely eat. While in class, my head is constantly down and I can barely mutter a word. All I can do is draw.
Yep, just like everybody else in the world, I have quite the obsession with “Draw Something.”
In fact, this column was due to my editor a full 8 hours before I actually got the chance to send it in. “Draw Something” was 100 percent to blame for my tardiness.
For those living under a rock, “Draw Something” is a smart phone game that is basically a combination of “Pictionary” and “Hanging with Friends.” For those living under a pile of rocks, “Hanging with Friends” is like hangman.
Game play is extremely simple. You choose between three words, each with a different point amount, to draw for your partner. If the partner guesses your word correctly through the drawing and the scrambled letters below, both of you earn the points. The goal is to have a streak going by guessing every word your partner draws for you.
Sure, it’s easy to cheat by using words. But that takes away all of the fun. There may be no winners either, but that’s to be expected in 2012. Back in the day, people used to play “Pictionary” competitively at parties. But now, it is played as impersonally as possible and everyone is a winner!
Words range from household objects like “faucet” to celebrities like “Snooki.” For the latter, it’s actually very easy to guess if you just draw a giant orange blob with a black poof on top.
Currently, I am involved in 21 different games. It’s gotten to be very stressful. “Draw Something” has taken priority in my life over studying, bathing and actual human contact.
It’s truly becoming my full-time job. Sure, the pay may be shitty and there aren’t any real benefits, but at least I get to work from home.
But what happens when “Draw Something” isn’t cool anymore? Do I continue playing and add it to my repertoire of iPhone games along with “Family Feud,” “Scramble with Friends,” and the previously mentioned “Hanging with Friends”? I am much too easily suckered into becoming addicted to whatever the hot game of the month is.
I’m sure app developers will find a way to creatively recycle other old board games. Digital versions of “Catch Phrase!,” “Apples to Apples” and “Hungry Hungry Hippos” will surely be available to us in the very near future.
My case is hopeless. I will forever be an iPhone game addict. The only way to change me is for me to switch over to a non-smartphone, but the thought of that literally makes me nauseous.
In the meantime, I will continue to draw like I’m the next Da Vinci. I’ll just try to knock it a few slots down on my list of priorities.
