Playing in its first Big 12 Conference match of the season, the No. 56 Missouri women’s tennis team fell 6-1 at the hands of No. 16 Texas A&M on Friday. The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-5.
In No. 1 singles, Missouri senior Nina Pantic was outdueled by No. 7 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (6-1 and 6-2).
Playing at No. 2 singles, Missouri sophomore No. 93 Rachel Stuhlmann saw her eight singles match win streak snap, as she was defeated by No. 111 Nazari Urbina (6-0 and 6-4).
No. 70 Wen Sun handled Missouri junior Maria Christensen at the No. 3 slot (6-0 and 6-1).
The Aggies also came out victorious in No. 4 singles, as Lauren Santacroce defeated Missouri senior Jamie Mera (6-3 and 6-1).
Missouri freshman Alex Clark gave the Tigers their lone singles win of the day when she topped Janelle Cuthbertson in the No. 5 position (3-6, 6-4 and 10-6).
Coach Sasha Schmid was especially proud of Clark’s performance.
“To see Alex compete the way she did today was very encouraging,” Schmid said. “For her to come out with a tough win like that was great.”
In No. 6 singles, Janine Erasmus came out victorious against Missouri junior Annemijn Koenen (6-1 and 6-2).
Although the Tigers lost the doubles point, they won at No. 1 doubles, as their duo of Pantic and Mera edged out Sanchez-Quintanar and Wen, 8-6.
The Tigers were not so fortunate in the No. 2 position. The Aggies combination of Urbina and Cuthbertson proved to be too much for Missouri’s Stuhlmann and Koenen, as they beat them 8-3.
And rounding out doubles play in the No. 3 slot, Santacroce and Oliver prevailed over Missouri’s Clark and Chiaf, 8-1.
Even though Pantic was victorious in her doubles match, she said the team must improve in that area.
“We’ve been working on doubles, and we need to get better,” Pantic said. “This week it’s definitely our main focus.”
Overall, the Tigers weren’t pleased with the result, but they did find some positives in the loss.
“I think we got outplayed, “ Mera said. “But we learned a lot today and hopefully this match will help us continue to grow.”
The Tigers will try and rebound when they face Texas Sunday at the Green Tennis Center.
