The Missouri baseball team mustered only six hits in a 13-7 loss to High Point on Sunday at Taylor Stadium.

The loss brought the series to a close, with the Tigers (12-6) winning two of the three games over the weekend.

High Point pulled ahead early, jumping all over Missouri freshman starter Brandon Platts. High Point tallied three runs throughout the first two innings before a Platts balk got him pulled in favor of senior right-hander Jeff Emens. Emens would fare no better, though, and High Point stretched its lead to seven before the second inning ended.

Platts’s performance was a disappointment, coach Tim Jamieson said.

“He’s a kid with really good stuff,” Jamieson said. “He generally throws a lot of strikes and he’s a guy who has a chance to be a weekend starter. The last couple starts he’s had, he hasn’t gotten it done. So, we have to look in another direction.”

The Tigers didn’t find their groove until late in the game, loading the bases in the seventh and eighth innings. They scored three and two runs in those innings, respectively.

It was too little too late as it turned out, and the Panthers were able to hold on to their lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Panthers starting pitcher Jacob Newberry threw a solid game, pitching six innings and keeping the Tigers from doing much offensively for most of the game. The Tigers mustered only one run during his time on the mound.

Jamieson said he was very impressed by the High Point pitching staff over the weekend series.

“All weekend I thought their starting pitching did a really good job at keeping our hitters off balance,” he said. “They had really good command of a variety of pitches. It was hard to sit on one pitch in one location.”

A few bright spots in the game for the Tigers included junior outfielder Dane Opel’s fifth home run of the year and another long blast by junior outfielder Blake Brown, his sixth.

Throughout the team’s 10-game win streak, Jamieson cited the Tigers’ ability to respond, saying that it was the main reason behind their success. The team lacked that response in Sunday’s game, Jamieson said.

“Guys have to realize, on Sundays especially, that the bullpen’s are tired,” Jamieson said. “We have to hang around and keep fighting. We made a little bit of a show of it at the end but that should have been going on during the middle of the game.”

With Big 12 Conference play looming ahead, Jamieson said the team needs to remain focused on improving and simply move on.

“(We) need to move on, recognize that even when we’re winning games there are things we need to work on,” Jamieson said. “In a game like this, those things become pretty obvious, but we’re not going to play that bad again. It’s one of those days you just have to move on from.”

The Tigers will look to get back on the winning side of things when they host Indiana State at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
