The Missouri women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to the No. 8 Texas Longhorns on Sunday at the Green Tennis Center, dropping the Tigers’ record to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 Conference play.
Sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann and junior Annemijn Koenen recorded the only Tiger victories, both in tiebreaker third sets in singles play.
“We missed a good opportunity today,” Missouri coach Sasha Schmid said. “I don’t think we fired on all cylinders. We didn’t compete consistently as a team.”
At No. 1 singles, Krista Damico defeated Missouri senior Nina Pantic (7-6 and 6-2).
Stuhlmann, playing at No. 2 singles, lost the first set to Noel Scott before rallying back behind solid serving and a very effective forehand to tie the second set at 5. After jumping ahead 6-5, the sophomore countered a set-point serve from Scott with a strong forehand return. Scott couldn’t handle it and her return sailed long, forcing the tiebreaker.
Channeling a bold intensity, Stuhlmann had Scott on the run throughout the entire third set. Fist pumping after every point, she took the match when a Scott return went wide, giving her the tiebreaker 11-9 and improving her season record to 12-2.
“Rachel hates to lose,” Schmid said. “That’s one of her best characteristics. It’s a testament to her competitive spirit.”
In the third slot, Texas’ Cierra Gaytan-Leach beat junior Maria Christensen (6-2 and 6-3).
At No. 4 singles, Lina Padegimaite topped Missouri freshman Jaime Mera in three sets (5-7, 6-3 and 10-4).
Texas’ Elizabeth Begley handled Missouri freshman Alex Clark at No. 5 singles (6-1 and 6-0).
At No. 6 singles, Koenen also fought back from a first-set loss to defeat a Longhorn in a third-set tiebreak. After dropping the first set 7-6, Koenen stormed back in the second, rallying from a 5-4 deficit to beat Juliana Gajic 7-5. She won the tiebreak 12-10.
Texas dominated in doubles play. The Longhorn tandem of Padegimaite and Scott defeated Pantic and Mera 8-7. Gaytan-Leach and Damico ran past the Stuhlmann/Koenen duo 8-1, and Begley and Gajic beat Clark and freshman Ashleigh Chiaf 8-3.
The games were played on the Green Tennis Center’s brand new outdoor courts, which opened Friday vs. Texas A&M. Although construction cleanup is not even complete yet, broken boxes and debris still litter the spectator section, Schmid said her team feels very comfortable on its new turf.
“They already feel like home,” she said. “They’re great courts. We feel like we’ve been here all along.”
