Shinedown has been known for making songs that are easy to enjoy, and _Amaryllis_ shows that it is continuing this trend.
The album begins with the song “Adrenaline,” which, as its title suggests, gets your adrenaline pumping. It is very upbeat and sets the tone for the rest of the album. This sounds like it would also work well being the first song at a concert just to get the audience pumped and excited.
Shinedown then plays “Bully,” which begins with a heavy riff and then uses a lighter sound for the verse. It has that stereotypical rock sound that you would hear on the radio, which doesn’t mean that it is bad. This song will probably be the most recognized song on the album, even though there are other songs on the album that top this track like “Amaryllis” and “Enemies.”
The title track “Amaryllis” is interesting because it uses an acoustic sound in the intro, which gives it a lighter sound than what is on most of the album. It’s another listener-friendly song but it has a lot of things going on instrument-wise. You can hear a steady melody throughout the song and the song shifts very well from section to section.
“Enemies” is a heavy song that will make you want to head bang and blare it out of your speakers as you are driving. “Nowhere Kids” is similarly heavy, but the feel of the two songs are different because you can tell “Enemies” was influenced by a more modern rock sound, as opposed to “Nowhere Kids,” where you can tell it has a late ’80s, early ’90s influence. “Nowhere Kids” almost sounds like Guns ‘N Roses or Slash playing with Myles Kennedy.
“I’ll Follow You” is a change-up for Shinedown. The song is a piano ballad, which generally isn’t what you think of when you think of Shinedown. But the band does well in new territory by making the song both easy to listen to and easy to sing along with.
_Amaryllis_ retains all of the qualities that make Shinedown what it is today and gives listeners and fans of the band sounds that may sound new to them.
