Although the second movie in the last two years made about a bounty hunter searching for an ex-lover who skipped out on bail, which then turns into a high-profile case, “One for the Money” is still worth a spot on your Netflix queue, if not worth an actual purchase.
Based on the book written by Janet Evanovich, “One for the Money” follows the story of Stephanie Plum (Katherine Heigl), a divorced and out-of-work lingerie saleswoman whose desperate pleas land her a job as a bounty hunter. Her first target happens to be Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara), a cop from her past with whom she still holds a grudge. While trying to take down Morelli, Plum realizes she might find out exactly what happened the night that Morelli, charged with murder, shot a man. Plum tries to prove his innocence.
Set in Trenton, New Jersey, “One for the Money” gives audiences a taste of Katherine Heigl’s attempt at a Jersey accent as she portrays her latest role in a romantic comedy, which has become her forte. This romantic comedy isn’t necessarily one action movie lovers will roll their eyes at, however. “One for the Money” takes on a “Law & Order”-type investigation plot that almost makes audiences forget how predictable some aspects of this movie are. Heigl does her best to capture the part, but compared to recent rom-com roles, she comes up a little short.
The real gem in the cast is supporting actress Debbie Reynolds, who plays Stephanie’s rambunctious grandma (“Halloweentown,” anyone?). It’s a shame Reynolds didn’t get more time on-screen; however, the few moments her character provides are some of the funniest. Another actress worth mentioning is Sherri Shepherd, who plays Lula, a hooker who helps Stephanie in exchange for snacks. Both Reynolds and Shepherd are lovable characters who take attention away from Heigl’s not-so-great performance. Worse than Heigl’s performance was that of John Leguizamo, who seems to have officially hit rock-bottom with his acting career – time for him to return to voicing Sid the Sloth in “Ice Age.”
Overall, “One for the Money” is pretty typical — it’ll keep audiences’ attention, but I can’t see this movie becoming an instant favorite on many people’s lists. It’s a sweet chick flick with little bits of action, but if you’re looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, “One for the Money” isn’t the one for your money.
