Missouri sophomore pitcher Rob Zastryzny was named the Big 12 Conference’s Pitcher of the Week following his complete-game shutout versus Texas Tech on Friday. Zastryzny becomes the third Tiger to earn a Big 12 weekly award this season, and the first pitcher since the 2010 season.
The honor follows a game in which Zastryzny allowed only seven hits throughout nine innings pitched, and one in which he needed only 112 pitches to get himself through the game. He became the second Tiger to throw a complete-game shutout this season, as junior Blake Holovach also accomplished the feat against High Point.
Zastryzny has been as reliable as they come for the Tigers as the Friday night starter. He leads the team with 57 strikeouts against only 22 walks. Over the last three starts (excluding a game versus Oklahoma, which was suspended in the top of the second), Zastryzny has posted a 1.44 ERA and allowed only 18 hits in 25 innings pitched.
When Missouri’s ace, junior Eric Anderson, went down early in the season with an elbow injury, Zastryzny stepped in as the team’s No. 1 starter. He has largely continued the form that earned him All-Big 12 Freshman Team, posting a 3.58 ERA, tops amongst the Tigers’ regular starters, and tossing a team-leading 70.1 innings.
Zastryzny sometimes struggles with high pitch counts but has shown he has the stuff to keep opposing offenses down.
Coach Tim Jamieson said he would like Zastryzny to have cleaner outings more often.
“You’d like him to be a little bit cleaner, you’d like for him to be able to take over a game … we’d like for him to be able to do that more consistently and more often,” Jamieson said. “Rob still has a tendency to work his way into trouble, and then work his way out of trouble, and you can’t work your way out of trouble every time.”
Zastryzny will look to continue his current form when the Tigers take on Arkansas in a two-game series Tuesday in Fayetteville, Ark.
