Students will notice some changes and additions to the MU Student Recreation Complex, which Director of Service and Facilities Diane Dahlmann has been orchestrating this summer.
One of the biggest complaints last year was overcrowding, especially in the Jungle Gym and Pump Room areas.
“The growing enrollment of the campus and the popularity of the MU Student Rec Complex have been the two driving forces for the changes in these areas,” Dahlmann said. “Student voices drive decisions, and the changes were accomplished to provide more fitness workout stations.”
Dahlmann’s solution to the overcrowding was to rearrange the machines in the Jungle Gym and move the dumbbell racks into the Quiet Room in order to conserve space. The extra space in the Jungle Gym now houses more workout machines.
“All opportunities for creating more space for more workout stations were considered,” Dahlmann said. “The changes have yielded about 1,000 gross square feet and an increase of 40 percent in workout stations.”
The Pump Room also had its machines and free weights rearranged, but it won’t have any new machines until Wednesday.
Along with the floor rearrangements, Dahlmann also had MizzouRec’s 50-meter pool drained for the first time since its installment in 2005. The sand filter was replaced, some tile and plaster were fixed and repainting was done on the shell of the pool while the pool was drained. The pool, which holds nearly 550,000 gallons of water, is now being refilled at a rate of 320 gallons per minute.
The recreation center spent approximately $100,000 dollars on the summer project.
