Aspen Heights and The Domain are two future luxury student housing developments that are making a name for themselves among students.

Aspen Heights is an all-student gated community that will be located on Grindstone Parkway and Old Interstate 63, near The Cottages development. Students have the option of living in two-story houses or cottages with two to four bedrooms. Resort-style facilities, including a large pool and clubhouse, are also being advertised.

Aspen Heights’ customer service sets itself apart from any other student housing in Columbia, said Stuart Watkins, public relations director for Aspen Heights, Inc.

“Our executives are trained through programs through Ritz Carlton,” Watkins said. “Really, the Aspen Heights experience, through our top-notch customer service, defines the company in a big way.”

The Domain will be located less than a mile away from campus, off of Stadium Boulevard and Old Highway 63. It will offer townhomes and apartment-style living with amenities similar to Aspen Heights. The apartments range from 432 square feet to 1,602 square feet and offer one to four bedrooms.

Although The Domain’s pricing is currently available at its leasing office, both The Domain and Aspen Heights have yet to publicly disclose pricing for their housing. Junior Julie Beydler said the fact that luxury housing companies don’t talk about pricing is a concern.

“It makes you excited, and then you find out it’s too expensive,” Beydler said.

Watkins said pricing, which is a set rate for each unit size, will be released in the coming weeks, and students who choose to sign up on Aspen Heights’ interest list will be the first to know when prices are available.

“Our prices are always very competitive with the market,” Watkins said. “They reflect the demand for housing here in Columbia.”

The opening of the development in Columbia will be Aspen Heights’ 11th location in the country. The company is mostly concentrated in the south and currently has developments in cities like Athens, Ga. and Auburn, Ala.

Clay Fleming is a student at Auburn University who has been living at Aspen Heights for the past two months. Clay said he feels that for the amenities and customer service that he’s being offered at Aspen Heights, it’s very affordable.

“Everyone has there different tastes but at Aspen Heights you truly get every pennies worth (sic),” Fleming said in an email.

Beydler said she thinks luxury student housing doesn’t reflect the real world.

“I think it’s a little bit ridiculous because you don’t need all that stuff,” she said. “It makes college even more of a bubble than it already is.”

Both The Domain and Aspen Heights will be open by the fall 2013 semester.

“We saw so much potential here in Columbia,” Watkins said. “We’re going to be part of this community for years and years to come. We look at it as an unique opportunity to better serve the Mizzou student body by offering the very best in student living.”
