Student art of various mediums displayed in Memorial Union this week will be judged by a group of students and faculty.
“We recognize the talent that’s in our department, and we want to give students a chance to display that talent,” Unions Arts Council President Samantha Mack said. “We want to make art a more prominent feature at Mizzou.”
The UAC had similar shows, which are open to all mediums of art, both semesters last year and decided to host the show again this semester.
“It’s really great that we have campus shows,” senior Elaine Bezold said. “It helps get lines on our resumes, and that’s how we get jobs.”
Bezold, one of the show’s artists, is a photographer who recently had her work displayed in an installation in Pingyao, China.
The piece she submitted for the show is a black-and-white photograph of a girl with her hair spread out and her hands pulling it back. Bezold said she likes to take black-and-white photographs because it presents a truth or reality of an event, but she can construct her own scenes or visually manipulate a photograph to make it fictitious.
Another artist, Jouvanne Thomas, said he’s excited for the UAC art show.
“This is my first juried art show I’ve displayed my art in,” Thomas said.
He said he isn’t afraid of the outcome.
“I have nothing to lose in this case,” Thomas said. “If I don’t win, it’s not going to be a big deal. I’m just trying to get my work out there.”
His piece is a chalk pastel drawing on Stonehenge paper. His teacher set up a still life with a parachute in the background for an interesting atmosphere, which he drew for his piece in this show.
Thomas, a senior getting his Bachelor of Fine Arts, said he hopes to be an illustrator for children’s books in the future. Though his piece for the show is a chalk pastel piece, his favorite medium is pen and ink.
The UAC plans, promotes and encourages programs to further the community’s awareness of and participation in the artistic growth at MU, Mack said.
“We’re trying to represent the art community at Mizzou,” he said.
The show will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 24 in Stotler Lounge. The public can come to the show and vote for their favorite piece. There will be a closing reception in which the UAC will announce the winners and distribute the awards. Gift cards will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners as well as a popular vote winner.
