After an extensive application and interview process, the Missouri Students Association president- and vice president-elect, Nick Droege and Zach Beattie, selected their 2013-14 executive cabinet.
The appointees were announced Wednesday: Joey Greenstein as the director of student activities, Jimmy Hibsch as the director of student communications, Sean Joy as the director of student services, Samantha Green as the legislative advocacy officer, Mason Schara as the chief of staff and Mahir Khan as the secretary of auxiliaries.
Academic Affairs Chairman Ben Levin and freshman senator Gunnar Johanson were also selected as aides to the cabinet. They will assist in legislative advocacy and other unofficial capacities, Droege said.
MSA’s Operations Committee and full Senate must approve the cabinet member appointments.
Many of the new cabinet members are not currently within MSA, which Droege said was an advantage because of the different leadership experiences the members have.
The 2013-14 cabinet members were chosen after submitting an application and being interviewed, after which Droege and Beattie selected the best candidates.
**Joey Greenstein: Director of Student Activities**
The best candidate for the director of student activities was Greenstein, Droege said.
“He’s the type of person who people can respect and work for because he’s a very high energy, high charisma person,” Droege said.
Greenstein has experience as an MU Summer Welcome leader, MU Outreach Team cochairman, Zou Crew sponsoring and marketing coordinator, MU Improv member and marketing coordinator, and Department of Student Activities special events committee member.
“I do a lot of things at once, so it’s nice to focus on just one thing,” Greenstein said.
Greenstein said he enjoys that the director of student activities has a direct effect on students, but he enjoys other aspects of the job as well.
“It’s not just about the job itself,” Greenstein said. “It’s about the team you work with and the people you service.”
**Jimmy Hibsch: Director of Student Communication**
As Droege stated, Hibsch, former Maneater staffer, was the “clear choice” for the job.
“Zach Toombs set the bar high for the director of student communications, and I see Jimmy as someone who can reach that bar and surpass it,” Droege said.
Hibsch, who has experience as a Maneater editor, Summer Welcome leader, MU Tour Team member and Alumni Association Student Board member, said he is focusing on completing Droege and Beattie’s campaign goals. He is also preparing his individual projects.
“Everyone’s very passionate,” Hibsch said. “I think that’ll carry over through next year.”
**Sean Joy: Director of Student Services**
Joy will be taking over Droege’s current cabinet position as the director of student services. Joy said it is nerve-wracking because Droege left large shoes to fill.
Joy has experience as president of the Mizzou Unity Coalition and ambassador for the School of Health Professions.
The cabinet, especially the director of student services, will focus on providing equal opportunities for students, Droege said.
“It’s exciting to continue the possibilities of what can be done after seeing what Nick accomplished,” Joy said.
**Samantha Green: Legislative Advocacy Officer**
Green, a previous president of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and team leader for MU Tour Team, was appointed due to her passion and drive, Droege said.
“I am very confident (she will) be a driving force behind the cabinet,” he said.
Droege said Green will focus on educating people and raising awareness for issues that affect students.
“I’m really motivated to get started and get involved with the position,” Green said.
**Mason Schara: Chief of Staff**
Schara competed against seven others for his job as chief of staff. Ultimately, it was Schara’s work with MSA’s Campus and Community Relations Committee that made him stand out, Droege said.
“Anyone that can come in and reshape a committee, what a committee looks like, or redefine the role of a committee in an organization has a very valuable skill set,” he said.
Schara said his work with CCRC, along with his work on the MU Outreach Team and MSA Outreach Team, will make him a good chief of staff.
“What I bring to the table is what we need right now,” Schara said.
**Mahir Khan: Secretary of Auxiliaries**
Khan’s desire to set a precedent for the secretary of auxiliaries made him stand out, Droege said.
Khan said his main focus is representing the auxiliaries to ensure they are getting the funding and publicity they need, as well as increasing the auxiliaries’ attendance and level of performance.
As a senior, Khan said he already has a reputation on campus by working for the Muslim Students Organization and Mizzou Dance Marathon.
“I can continue to make a difference regardless of whether (the job) gets me somewhere,” Khan said.
**Ben Levin and Gunnar Johanson: Unofficial Cabinet Members**
Both Levin and Johanson exhibited specific talents Droege said were beneficial for the cabinet as a whole.
Levin’s knowledge of legislative procedure and MSA is unmatched, Droege said.
Johanson exhibited tremendous initiative and drive, Droege said.
