It’s a match made in heaven: Tegan and Sara’s voices find a home among the synthesizers and bass pulsing through the whole of their seventh studio album, _Heartthrob_. Since working with Tiesto and David Guetta, the Calgary duo has been blessing dance music with a rare and beautiful thing: female voices over heavy beats. And they actually sing, too.
On _Heartthrob_, Tegan and Sara manage to achieve a perfect balance of impassioned vocals and hypnotizing beats that make sitting still while listening nearly impossible. The album starts off strong with the infectious dance pop single “Closer” and keeps the energy up through the moody, vocal-heavy “Shock To Your System.” Layering piano and synth with flawless harmonies seems to be the sisters’ forte. Regardless of the actual intended meaning of the title of the album, “Heartthrob” is an apt description of the steady foot-tapping, head-bobbing pulse that feels its way throughout each and every track.
Even after nearly 15 years in the business, Tegan and Sara have still managed to genuinely sweep from rock to pop without trying to desperately grasp for relevance in a music industry that too generously grants the limelight to artists with more sex appeal than actual talent. And for that, dance halls everywhere should thank them.
