“The Host” has a familiar plot: teenage girl tries to save the world from supernatural/post-apocalyptic forces while in the midst of a heated love triangle.
Although it should be recognizable, as “The Host” was written for the screen based upon the book by Stephanie Meyer, who also penned those pesky vampire novels.
Yet “The Host” is much more complex than sparkly, shirtless supernaturals. The film takes place sometime in the near future. Earth is being assimilated by “peaceful” aliens who invade the bodies of humans to cleanse our population of war and destruction. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) has her body taken over by a soul named Wanderer who must relive Melanie’s memories to locate one of the last human resistances. However, Melanie feistily fights the extraterrestrial and struggles for control of her body.
The plot loses some of its momentum after the initial act. The scientific thriller component is almost completely drowned by the cliché romances that unfold. Ronan is an exceptional actress with impressive past work, but seems to downgrade herself with this cheesy romantic thriller.
While the film kept me interested enough, I found myself rolling my eyes more times than I would if I had been watching a “Twilight” movie. And that’s a lot.
