The Legion of Black Collegians formally inducted next year’s executive board members Wednesday.
At the start of the meeting, current executive board members sat across from newly elected members and after each stood up and recited the oath, they switched places so the new board faced the general body.
Each current member stood and read the duties of their office.
Marnae Chavers, current Freshman Action Team chairwoman, will replace Greer Relphorde as president. According to the LBC constitution, the president has the power to preside over meetings and all other offices are responsible to her. The president is also the spokesperson for LBC. According to the constitution, the office must be filled by a current executive board member.
Finance Chairman Paanii Annan will replace Cameron Grant as vice president. Duties for vice president include presiding over senate meetings as speaker of the senate and performing financial inquiries, according to the constitution.
The offices of president and vice president were elected together.
Communications chairwoman for next year will be Lechae Mottley, who will replace Bridget Botchway-Bradley. This position was the only one that had competition during the election. Mottley won against opponent Jordan Williams.
“It was definitely an experience,” Mottley said. “I’ve never campaigned before. It was really rewarding to be elected.”
According to the constitution, the communications chairperson is in charge of all communications and publicity for the organization. Mottley will also be in charge of the report to the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government, the LBC newsletter and the African-American student yearbook.
Vernon Driskell will be political action chairman, replacing Cynthia Spires.
Driskell said he’s very excited for next year.
“This group has the potential to do great things,” Driskell said. “We’re very cohesive. We’re going to get a lot accomplished.”
According to the constitution, Driskell’s duties include being chief advisor to the president and coordinating political or educational events that pertain to African-American students.
Steven Blakley will replace Annan as finance chairman. According to the constitution, Blakley’s duties will include maintaining a record of fiscal affairs and processing requests for funds.
Celeste Tyler will replace Anika Arties as executive secretary. Her duties will include keeping the minutes and any books or records for LBC, as well as sending emails over the listserv.
Curtis Taylor Jr. will replace Jeffery Perkins as activities chairman. Taylor Jr. will be in charge of activities and programs “for the social, recreational, educational, and cultural life of members of the LBC,” according to the constitution.
The only officer not elected was India Simpson. Simpson will replace Chavers as FAT chairwoman, an ex-officio position according to Chavers, meaning it will be utilized at the discretion of the president.
Simpson is a freshman who heard about the open position through emails, though she has only been involved with LBC in the past few weeks.
“I think it’s a great organization,” Simpson said. “I’m so excited to work with this group next year.”
The induction was the last LBC senate meeting of the year.
