There’s never a dull night in the music world of Columbia, and Sunday will be no different when Mojo’s will host the North Village Music & Art Party from 5-9 p.m.
Columbia boasts an atmosphere filled with budding artists, hopeful singers and optimistic minds. While the entire town shines bright with artistic ability, the North Village Arts District houses many of the artistic and creative minds that make Columbia such a diverse location.
The area has always been considered the arts district, housing artists and bohemians that claim studios there. The eight-block radius that is North Village is a part of town comprised of old buildings that have been renovated to house dance studios, galleries, cafes and music venues.
The young and soon-to-be famous didn’t have as much of a designation until now, as the community begins to make a name for itself through empowering the people to reach out to Columbia and show them talent and raw musical ability. However, they can’t perform without help from the community.
That’s why the North Village Music & Art Party is taking place. It’s a non-profit event put on by the district in order to benefit the district and the Farmers & Artisans Market. These programs need funding in order to run, and artists in the area need to benefit as well. The local talent in Columbia needs to be seen, which is why this event will be a great endeavor.
“We have a great pocket of dynamic artists in our community that people don’t know about yet,” says Lisa Bartlett, owner of Artlandish Gallery and head of the committee for this party.
With Mojo’s hosting the party, there will be a plethora of artists to know by the time the night is over. Music, artwork and pottery will be on display throughout the night.
“It benefits to have art in a community,” Bartlett says.
The party will be a show as well as an interactive fun time for everyone. Activities such as dodge art, bean bag tosses, an art walk (like a cake walk) and a unique game of “duck bingo” (with live ducks) will make the night eventful for adults and children alike.
In fact, children are encouraged to attend. The party costs $5 per ticket and anyone younger than six gets in for free. Tickets can be purchased at Artlandish Gallery, Yoga Sol and Root Cellar. There will be a silent auction with prizes from the community galleries and shops. Plus the party committee has put together a stellar band line up with artists Dave Bandy, Sam Shin and Trio Desterrado entertaining the crowd throughout the night.
The North Village Music & Art Party is a promising event for the future of aspiring artists, the district and the Farmers & Artisan Market.
“I see pretty big things happening,” Bartlett says. “I want to see more collaboration between the bigger festivals in town and North Village.”
