A Columbia man was killed in a firearm-related incident Thursday.

A woman arriving at a Newton Drive residence found 23-year-old Dontay Tolston lying on the floor with a gunshot wound, according to investigators.

Tolston was immediately transported to a local hospital where he was treated for “serious injuries,” Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said.

Tolston was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. on Friday.

Columbia police officers were dispatched to the residence at 11:33 p.m. on Thursday in response to a call reporting shots fired in the area. The officers were unable to locate a shooter.

At this time, investigators have not released information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspect. They are canvassing the area and local businesses for potential witnesses.

An autopsy was performed in the morning following Tolston’s death, but the findings from the examination have yet to be released.

Both a motive behind the crime and knowledge of whether the shooter fired from inside or outside the residence are still unknown. Additional details of the crime, including the weapon used and number of shots fired, have not been released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators will release more information as it becomes available, Stroer said.
