What seemed to be a promising take on the horrors of modern dating from a fresh and funny perspective, “That Awkward Moment” unfortunately proved to be predictable and uninspired.
Like so many others, it attempts to tackle the complexities of relationships today, and in a break from the traditional mold of rom-coms, does it from the point of view of the guys.
Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller play three best friends who take a vow to stay single no matter what and are immediately confronted with budding relationships they don’t quite want to resist.
Set in New York City, a familiar venue for romantic flicks, the movie wrestles with the confusing “define the relationship” moment between a hook-up and a commitment. Incorporating several aspects of today’s dating scene from Facebook stalking to wingwomen, the romantic comedy does have some heart-warming moments and clever one-liners, though they’re dispersed among scene after scene of “guy talk.”
Efron, Jordan and Teller are convincing, but unfortunately stuck with a repetitive script and a plot that’s anything but unpredictable. “That Awkward Moment” stumbles short of memorable. This one might be worth the Netflix wait.
