Anyone who has ever stayed in Columbia over the summer knows the city doesn’t see nearly as much activity as it does during the hustle and bustle of the school year, but that doesn’t mean it has to be all work and no play. The nice weather and easy-going nature of Columbia offers up tons of opportunities to have some fun over the long break.
Just in time for the sunny season, MOVE put together a list of 11 activities that you absolutely must accomplish before the summer comes to a close:
11. Be adventurous and try **three new flavors** of ice cream at Sparky’s. Get wild, MOVErs.
10. **Take a dip** in Truman’s Pond at the MU Student Recreation Complex, or lie out and get your tan on. When else do you have this much time to relax?
9. Avoid the hot Missouri sun by seeing one of the many independent films showing at **Ragtag Cinema** this summer. You’ll feel artsy and stay cool at the same time. It’s a win-win.
8. Enjoy the warm weather and go fishing at **Stephens Lake Park.** If fishing isn’t your forte, you can also walk, bike or take a swim.
7. Get cultured and **go to one of the concerts** in Columbia during the Missouri Theatre’s Hot Summer Nights Festival. Hosted by the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, the festival runs from June 5 to July 12.
6. Attend Columbia’s annual **Fourth of July** celebration, Fire in the Sky. There will be concerts, concessions and, of course, fireworks.
5. **Do some redecorating** by taking a class at The Canvas and creating an original piece of artwork for your room. If you’re over 21, you can even sip on some wine while letting your creative ability flow.
4. Watch a **movie in the park.** Flat Branch shows movies each month on an inflatable screen for just $2 a pop. Fun fact: You can get a little summertime Christmas cheer with July’s movie, “Elf.”
3. Visit **Devil’s Icebox** at Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. View it from the top, or take a cave tour through the six-mile-deep cave system.
2. Pull up a chair for this year’s **Ninth Street Summerfest** with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros on June 4. The Blue Note blocks off all of Ninth Street for the summer’s biggest outdoor concert and celebration.
1. **Streak the Quad,** because you have to do it before you graduate, and summer is the best time for it. You won’t get chilly without your clothes, and you’re less likely to be spotted by someone you know since CoMo will be a little less crowded.
