It may have been Halloween, but the Razorbacks didn’t scare the Tigers.
Missouri volleyball got off to a hot start against Arkansas on Friday, attacking at a solid .273 while holding the Razorbacks to a -.111 rate and 13 points. Despite some questionable officiating, the Tigers were still able to start the opening set on an 11-3 run, never looking back en route to a 25-13 set win.
“At the end of the day, you can’t let that stop you,” Missouri coach Wayne Kreklow said of the early poor calls. “You have to keep playing.”
The second set was far more competitive, with Missouri never holding more than a two-point lead until the score reached 17-14. From that point on, the Tigers would extend their lead to five points at 21-16, closing out the second set.
After the break, the third set was a carbon copy of the second, with the Razorbacks battling early and keeping things close deep into the set. The Tigers held a five-point lead with a chance to close out the match, but saw the Razorbacks rattle off three straight points to make it 24-21, forcing Kreklow to take a timeout to stop the bleeding.
“(I told them) ‘You have to remember what we’re doing well,’” Kreklow said. “We’re passing well, we’re serving fairly aggressive, and above all, it’s no time to get timid.”
After a Missouri timeout, the Tigers came back out and finished it off, winning the third set 25-22.
“Our ability to let past mistakes go (helped us),” sophomore outside hitter Carly Kan said. “We were able to let it go and (move on to) the next ball, and that’s something we’ve struggled with at times this season.”
Kreklow said he was content with the team’s performance.
“It was a really good night for our kids,” he said. “I’m really happy for them. This was a tough one; Arkansas is a really good team.”
