For redshirt junior Jordan Cook and the men’s cross country team, Friday’s run did not seem very far. The men, who are used to running 8,000-meter races, ran a 5,000-meter course at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival.
Cook led the charge for the Tiger men, finishing second overall with a time of 15:41. He crossed the line less than a second ahead of teammate Marc Dubrick, a redshirt sophomore.
Five Tiger men finished in the top ten runners, giving them a first place finish over University of Missouri-Kansas City, St. Louis University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
“Having a good, really strong first race makes it look pretty optimistic for the rest of the season,” Cook said.
The Mizzou women also had success with their 5,000 meter run. Sophomore Karissa Schweizer and junior Katelyn Fischer finished in first and second overall, respectively. The teammates both crossed the line with a time of 18:17. Freshman Kelli Jackson finished third, running her race in 18:29.
Like the men, the women also finished in first as a team. They outran Western Kentucky University and three other Division I schools.
The Tigers will run again at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 26.
