The Missouri cross-country team competed at the Southeastern Conference Championships on Friday in College Station, Texas. The Tigers finished sixth on the men’s side and eighth on the women’s.
Arkansas won the meet on both the men’s and women’s side.
Once again, sophomore Karissa Schweizer led the charge for the Tiger women. She earned All-SEC honors, which is given to the top 14 runners on both the men’s and women’s side. Schweizer finished in 14th, which put her on the All-SEC Second Team.
“She work really hard to get into that 14 spot,” coach Marc Burns said. “That was awesome, very exciting for her.”
Juniors Nicole Mello and Teylar Adelsberger each broke into the top-50, finishing 47th and 49th, respectively. Freshmen Kelli Jackson and Emmie Hahn rounded out the top five runners for the Tigers.
All five of Missouri’s scoring runners will return next year. This year’s team was also without junior Kaitlyn Fischer and freshman Kate Smith, both of whom are out for the season due to injury. Fischer qualified for NCAA championships as a freshman and Smith was one of the Tigers’ top runners at the beginning of the season.
The Tiger men scored 146 points at the meet, only four points behind fifth place Georgia’s 142. Sophomore Sheldon Keence was the first Tiger to finish, crossing the line in 22nd place. Sophomore Marc Dubrick was only a second behind Keence, finishing in 24th place. Juniors Jordan Cook, Will Crocker and Dan Roe rounded out the top-five for the Tigers.
All five of the Tigers scoring runners finished within 30 seconds of each other. Each broke the top-40 at the meet. Like the women, all five will be back for the 2016 season.
Mizzou next competes Nov. 13 at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Lawrence, Kansas. Runners have the chance to qualify for the NCAA championships at the regional meet.
Burns said that the team was disappointed in their showing at SEC Championships, but they are looking forward to the Regional meet.
“We are going to see a lot of what this team is made of,” Burns said. “How you bounce back from a disappointing weekend really defines what a team’s all about.”
