The Missouri Tigers wrestling team’s streak of 37 straight dual victories came to an end Friday night in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The No. 4 Tigers were defeated by No. 5 Oklahoma State by a score of 23-9, two days shy of going two straight calendar years without a loss.
The dual featured several competitive matches, but Oklahoma State got off to a hot start, building up a 9-0 lead after winning the first three matches of the night.
Starting at 125 pounds, Oklahoma State’s 10th Eddie Kilmara defeated No. 10 Barlow McGhee 3-2. Then, unranked OSU sophomore Gary Wayne Harding upset Missouri junior Zach Synon by a score of 4-2. Junior Matt Manley put up a tough fight for the Tigers but fell to the Cowboy’s No. 1 Dean Heil 3-1.
Lavion Mayes, a 149-pounder, managed to continue his streak, earning the first win for the Tigers on Friday night. He defeated No. 16 Anthony Collica 5-2, improving his record to 19-0 this season.
After the Tigers’ first victory of the night, OSU responded by winning two straight matches.
Trailing 15-3, Mizzou fought back in hopes of keeping its dual streak alive. However, sophomore No. 4 Willie Miklus for the Tigers was upset by No. 19 Nolan Boyd 7-1.
No. 2 J’den Cox, a junior, earned the Tigers their third and final victory of the night, winning 7-3, but it wasn’t enough. In the final match of the night, Tigers heavyweight Romero lost by technical fall.
